The kharif season is the backbone of Indian agriculture. A few weeks of careful preparation can determine whether the crop establishes well or struggles through the monsoon. Start field readiness at least 15 days before the expected onset of rain.
Plough the field when the soil has enough moisture for a clean cut but is not waterlogged. Level the field to allow uniform water distribution and prevent cottony patches where seedlings drown. Maintain open drainage channels so excess rainwater can leave the field quickly.
Test soil at least once a season for pH, organic carbon, and major nutrients. Apply well-decomposed compost or green manure to improve organic matter. This is also the ideal time to identify zinc, iron, or boron deficiencies before they appear as field symptoms.
Treat seeds with bio-protectants to guard young seedlings against early soil-borne infections. Strong, healthy roots in the first 21 days set the foundation for the entire season. Never sow into cold, wet, or crusted seedbeds.
The plants that establish best are not the ones sprayed the most — they are the ones that never had to struggle at the start.
A pre-monsoon spray of botanical protectants builds a protective shield on the young canopy before high humidity arrives. This proactive approach reduces fungal pressure later and keeps input costs down.
