Antifungal Activity on Plants
Moringa leaf and root extracts have demonstrated significant ability to control major plant pathogenic fungi, particularly soil-borne and foliar diseases. Target Pathogens: Effective against Fusarium spp. (wilt), Rhizoctonia solani (damping-off/stem rot), Athelia rolfsii, Aspergillus niger, Alternaria solani, and Penicillium species. Moringa extract at 15–20% concentration can completely inhibit the mycelial growth of Fusarium oxysporum and F. solani. It is used as a natural, sustainable bio-pesticide to replace chemical fungicides, with aqueous extracts often showing higher inhibitory action than solvent extracts.
Antibacterial Activity on Plants
Moringa extracts are highly potent against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative plant bacteria, breaking down cell walls and membranes, leading to leakage of cytoplasmic content. Target Pathogens: Pseudomonas syringae, Pseudomonas putida, Agrobacterium tumefaciens, and Bacillus subtilis. Moringa seed extract contains pterygospermin, a compound with strong antibiotic properties against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Bacillus subtilis.
