Every yield, every crop, and every dose of fertiliser flows from the soil. Yet soil health is the most under- invested asset on Indian farms. These five practices rebuild it naturally, cost-effectively, and lastingly.
Stubble burning destroys organic matter and beneficial biology in minutes. Returning residue — or using it as mulch — feeds soil organisms slowly and steadily throughout the season.
Legumes fix atmospheric nitrogen into the soil for free. A pulse or green-manure crop every second season reduces nitrogen bills and breaks pest cycles at the same time.
Compost, vermicompost, or farmyard manure at 2–4 tonnes per acre builds the organic matter that holds water and nutrients. It is the closest thing to a soil insurance policy.
Deep plowing burns off organic carbon. Shallow cultivation and reduced tillage protect the soil structure and the microbial network beneath it.
Beneficial bacteria, fungi, and earthworms are the farm's invisible workforce. Botanical soil health inputs, mulching, and avoiding harsh chemical drenches keep this workforce alive and productive.
You cannot buy soil health in a bag. You build it acre by acre, season by season.
